Chapter 10 - Story Behind the Song: "Walk Like a Man"
I am my father’s son. I loved him. I hated him. I worshipped him. I wanted to kill him. I wanted his attention, and I was afraid of his obsessive control. I learned what it means to be a man from watching my dad, and then I had to unlearn it.
You would think this song would be about my father and his many troubles… his toxic fear, which manifested itself into raging, uncontrolled anger—which turned violent at times—followed by very real, tearful, paralyzing repentance.
You would think this would be about the:
name-calling
yelling
public humiliation
threats
gaslighting
outbursts
jealousy
guilting
lying
But this is not about that.
Or about the ways we tried to fix it—
We blamed ourselves.
Had no boundaries.
Until one day,
In the middle of the night—
She woke me up, and
WE LEFT.
